Community Writers Workshops
'

The Community Writers Workshop will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from 12:00-1:30 in the UND Memorial Union. The workshops are free; those interested should simply contact Brian Maxwell (fiction workshop) or Thom Caraway (poetry workshop) for details and to sign up.

Community Fiction Workshop
Saturday, March 29
12:00-1:30

Our fiction workshop will examine different writing styles in an attempt to identify the best strategy for specific literary needs. Participants will get a chance to introduce their work, ideas, goals, aspirations, plans, and artistic concerns. We will explore devices such as voice, dialogue, point of view, setting, themes, language, etc. Attention will be paid to both traditional and innovative modes of fiction, keeping in mind the purpose and scope of your individual writing projects. If you don't have a specific project you’re currently working on, that’s okay. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced writer, this workshop will allow you to benefit from exposure to different literary methods, approaches, and techniques. Since time limitations will most likely prevent us from taking a close look at each other's work, we will do a short exercise designed to help you find the right focus for your writing. We will also look at a number of books that might be useful to you as writers.

To enroll or for more information contact Brian at brian.maxwell@und.nodak.edu.

Community Poetry Workshop
Saturday, March 29
12:00-1:30

The community poetry workshop will provide an opportunity for poets from the surrounding area to receive practical advice and to sharpen their skills. Writing exercises will emphasize the following techniques: shaping observation and experience to meet the needs of the poem, using concrete imagery, and getting beyond mere description to bring out the poem’s underlying significance. These activities will help participants to revise existing poems as well as generate new drafts, and they are based on the belief that a poem should be an act of discovery for both writer and reader. Each writer should bring at least one poem to revise, though it is possible that due to enrollment, not every poem you bring will be work-shopped in the given time.

To enroll and for more information contact Thom at thomas.caraway@und.nodak.edu
